Day Trips from Papeete

Cross the Sea of the Moon to Moorea's Cook's Bay, where spinner dolphins often surf the ferry bow wave. Once docked, a rental scooter lets you climb pineapple-road switchbacks to the Belvedere lookout. The cratered peaks feel close enough to touch and the air smells of warm pine needles. Finish with a mask-and-fin float above stingrays at the public beach opposite the Sheraton, water so clear you'll count their spots from the surface.

Drive east from Papeete before traffic thickens, passing paperbark trees and roadside BBQ stands scented with coconut husk smoke. Three cascades sit within a five-minute walk of the coastal road, Vaimahutu drops 90 m into a pool you can hear hissing from the trailhead. Continue to Fa'aone for a shrimp truck lunch, then loop back via the volcanic shoreline where blowholes shoot salt spray overhead.

The road narrows past Taravao, mangroves giving way to coconut corridors and the faint smell of diesel from fishing skiffs. At Teahupoo the tar ends at a wooden bridge where you'll hear reef waves detonating like distant artillery. A pirogue (outrigger canoe) tour threads the reef pass at low tide, putting you eye-level with turquoise walls admired by surfers worldwide. Lunch is grilled mahi under breadfruit trees.

Head south along the pineapple coastal road to Papeari, Tahiti's oldest village, where morning markets sell pamplemousse the size of softballs. The adjacent botanical garden, once Paul Gauguin's wandering ground, smells of damp earth and overripe mangoes; you'll see his reproduction hut and the kind of pandanus shoreline he painted, all turquoise fringes and gnarled roots.
